I consider myself to be primarily self-taught since my only formal training is from a metalsmithing class I took at the Brookline Arts Center a decade ago. The next time I touched metal was in 2015 when I built a studio in my Boston apartment’s dining room and began a collection. I was determined for jewelry to be my ticket out of corporate America. I worked mornings, lunch breaks, nights, and weekends to get my business off the ground. Within 4 months, I had left my office job to pursue jewelry full-time.

Every piece is hand-fabricated by me. I appreciate vintage items, like art, furniture, and handbags, to show their history. I’m drawn to imperfections. For that reason, my jewelry has an industrial, worn appearance. I intentionally put scratch marks in my work and oxidized pieces to show texture.

My business is in year 5 and my work is constantly evolving but there are some principles I will always stand behind: stay small, touch every piece, and create what I would wear.

Hand Painted Silk Wearables and Accessories

I interpret color and design on silk, a very luxurious natural fiber which drapes beautifully and is incredibly soft to wear. My designs are derived from nature and imagination, each piece is an original.

I have always loved the interaction of color, the intense, bold colors that can be painted with dyes onto the silk serve as the perfect medium to express this. I have been designing and making jewelry for more than 35 years, first in metals and then incorporating handmade glass. Creating my own glass beads for 25+ years gives me the opportunity to customize each piece I make; although some may feel similar, each creation is unique to its wearer.

Exploring the qualities of glass and color are what drive my work; using light and transparency in surprising ways along with layering color on color helps me to create unusual contemporary beads and jewelry. Cynthia began working with clay in 1977. A North Shore native, she has always been drawn to the ocean and its vastly changing colors as is evident in her selection of glazes. Inspired by nature, Cynthia integrates shells, coral, and environmental motifs into her work. Recycled and local beach glass is melted into some of the glazed pieces to create a spectacular depth of color.

Cynthia’s new collection of functional and ornamental work includes vases, mugs, berry bowls, ornaments, lamps, bowls, fish platters and trays. Each piece is unique and all are oven, dishwasher and microwave safe.

After earning a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design - I pursued a long professional career as a textile designer in NYC and Boston. Relocating to Gloucester Massachusetts - I became intrigued with the Japanese folk art of painting and rubbing fish to document its size, also known as Gyotaku. For the last several years I have acquired fish from local fishermen and experimented with different printing techniques. Throughout this journey, I have documented many species which are now under strict fishing regulations.

Totally Wired Sculpture- Brian Murphy

I am a self-taught artist and I started Totally Wired Sculpture in 2002 and I have gradually spent more time in the creative process, which seems to be a nice balance to my work as a child therapist, primarily dealing with issues of trauma.

My work can be seen as a lighthearted line drawing in the medium of steel wire. Often political and humorous themes are incorporated which can challenge or amuse the viewer leaving them uplifted.

The goal of each piece is to create kinetic movement from the tension in the wire so that the figures seem to dance or sway on their own and appear enlivened. Mythological themes and tales of transformations dominate illustrating the power of art to help us change and grow.

Melissa Cox, resident and local freelance photographer of our wonderful city of Gloucester, has been taking pictures since high school and recently found her love of nautical, architecture and landscape photography. She loves being out on the water taking pictures of ships, whales and sunsets. When she’s not at work, traveling or being one of our city councilors, you can usually find her taking pictures of our photogenic Cape Ann.

I play with fire!

I have been an artist all of my life and found my forever medium twelve years ago in working hot glass into original artisan jewelry. At my torch I craft (one at a time) blown hollow beads; large, hand- formed disk beads; & curved tube beads. Materials include Italian soda lime glass; silver glass; metals; & glass enamel. The beads are kiln annealed for strength & durability. Inspiration includes ancient patinas; the interaction of light with transparent glass; texture; pattern; and abstract painting. A lifelong artist, Deb Schradieck is known for her watercolor work with its vivid color and unusual detail. Inspired by the famous Cape Ann light, her favorite subject matter is boats, reflections, architecture, street scenes and coastal landscapes, especially the local working waterfront. Deb spends a lot of time taking photos in the summer and uses them as references for her paintings over the winter. She and her husband, Peter, live in Rockport and enjoy spending time on their boat “Seaquel” which is docked in Gloucester’s inner harbor.

“I enjoy painting the intricacies of light, shadow, and pattern while maintaining the accuracy and realism that is satisfying to me as a representational painter. I see abstraction in reality and combine it with intentional color juxtaposition and glazing. Some of this is learned technique and some of it is an innate thing. Watercolor feels good to me. I love the way the color soaks in to the paper and coats it. It’s very tight, but it’s also loose. I finish every one that I start. There is never a ‘do-over’. Being precise is what I like to do. I learned years ago not to fight it, but to embrace it.”

Deb holds Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration from Mass College of Art & Design (1981). In addition to watercolor she also works in pen and ink and occasionally in oils. She is a juried artist member of the Rockport Art Association, the North Shore Arts Association and the Cape Ann Artistans; as well as the Rocky Neck Art Colony. Her paintings can also be seen in Gloucester at The Gallery on the Neck, 43 Rocky Neck Ave., and at her home studio in Rockport by appointment or on the CAA semi-annual tour.

Racket Shreve, a Salem native, graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1968 with a B.F.A. in Illustration. He served in the United States Army, not only as a field illustrator, but also as a graphic designer for the Deputy Joint Chiefs of Staff. Upon discharge and after extensive travel, Racket met with much success as a freelance illustrator in Boston. His work has been reproduced in Boston Magazine, Atlantic Monthly and Sail Magazine. He most recently illustrated Salem historian Jim McAllister’s book “Salem from Naumkeag to Witch City” and Raymond Bates Jr’s book “Shipwrecks North of Boston”. Racket’s work has focused mainly on maritime subject matter. His avid interest in small boat sailing and boat model restoration has contributed veracity to his technical talents as a marine painter. He has been sailing the North Shore waters for over 25 years and his work reflects a keen perception of it’s various traditional vessels and panoramas. Racket’s work has been selected to be included in many of Mystic Seaport’s annual juried international shows including 2006 and 2007 as well as many of Mystic Seaport’s exclusive Invitational Exhibits. As a top competitor in the1990 Massachuetts Duck Stamp Competition, Shreve’s detailed painting of a Golden Eye Hen Decoy was selected to be reproduced on the 1990 State stamp. Racket’s work has been seen on the Channel Two Auctions since 1974 and he has been a featured artist in the juried “Two Collection”, a special arts segment of the annual WGBH on-air auction, since its conception. Racket’s work has been accepted annually at the Marblehead Arts Festival since 1974 where he has won numerous awards in painting and drawing to including two honorable mentions in 2006, a “Best of Show” in 2007 and the Lee R. Smith Award in 2008. His one-man show in 2005 at the Arnould Gallery, Marblehead was a huge success. In 2007, Racket was asked by the Salem Maritime National Historic Site to design and create a Christmas tree ornament for display in The White House. His work hangs in many homes and private collections and institutions to include the United States Department of Defense, Department of the Interior, the Peabody Essex Museum and Forbes.

Virginia was educated at Rochester Institute of Technology at the School for American Craftsmen with a B.F.A. in metal crafts and jewelry making. Virginia has a small studio at her residence in Cranston, RI where she works designing her unique line of handcrafted jewelry. Her line is all genuine sterling silver, 14k gold with semi-precious stones or freshwater pearls combined in a unique way in her own distinctive style. Each high quality piece is designed and hand- crafted by the artist.

The main techniques Virginia uses are casting and also hand-fabricating. She works mainly in sterling silver but alsoa small amount in 14k gold. The pieces can then be used in a variety of combinations, with different finishes and in conjunction with many types of sterling chains and semiprecious beads and fresh-water pearls.

Many of Virginia's pieces have movable elements, which as well as being beautiful to look at and interesting to listen to, also inspire a tactile interaction with the piece. She is inspired by antiquity and by modern designs. Her work is an expression of the juxtaposition of these two diametric elements. Her pieces have a strong sense of modernity with a sculptural depth that translated into a work of art that can be worn.

David Arsenault was born in upstate New York. He was first captivated by art in 1970 when he discovered a reproduction of Edward Hopper's painting Gas in a grade school library book. However, it wasn’t until the early ‘90s—more than twenty years later—that a professor in his graphic arts program reintroduced him to Hopper’s work and he felt decisively compelled to study painting. The early influence had it's effect on him to the degree that The Wall Street Journal once wrote that "Some of Mr. Arsenault’s paintings could pass for works by Edward Hopper.” He studied painting at the University at Albany (NY). Since he first began showing his work in 1993, David has had or participated in hundreds of local, regional, and national exhibitions: in New York City, Chicago, Vermont, Connecticut, throughout upstate New York, and of course in Massachusetts: Cape Ann, Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard, Williamstown, and more. Arsenault has also served as an exhibition juror, conducted painting demonstrations and critiques, and published articles including in The Artist's Magazine.

I produce fine contemporary jewelry and other metal designs primarily in the precious metals of gold, silver, palladium, and platinum. These are often further defined with the addition of texturing, gemstones and other unique lapidary, or resin inlay. "Clean. Crisp. Geometric. Architectural. Subtle elegance." After a 14 year career as a commercial photographer, I discovered encaustic*. Now, 14 years later, I am still enjoying its versatility and depth. To create my pieces, I paint the elements with watercolors, inks or gouache and then cut them out with an exacto blade. I take these painted paper cuts and collage them in layers of encaustic wax. As the composition builds, so too does the depth of the wax.

Often painting begins with a story in my head. It is usually something simple and as I work other thoughts and feelings will impact the piece. The perfect imperfection of life, the simplicity and wonder of childhood, the peace found in nature and the joys and sorrows that have touched my life are some of the things that inspire those thoughts and feelings. I believe these are the elements of living that mould us and unite our human spirit.

*Encaustic is both the name for a medium and a process. It comes from the ancient greek word “enkaustikos” and means “to heat” or “to burn in”. Encaustic medium is comprised of beeswax and damar resin, a hardening agent collected from trees grown in the East Indies. The medium is applied hot and reheated throughout the process securing the layers to one another.

I have dabbled in all sorts of crafts over the years, from quilting, to weaving but finally found my passion in glass. I love the way that glass is transformed by the flame – you never really know what you’re going to get until it comes out of the kiln. I create lampwork beads which I add to stainless steel serving pieces as well as fused glass plates to complement the utensils. The term lampwork comes from the time when artists used oil lamps to melt the glass. Today, we use table mounted torches and the more modern term is flameworking. The process of sitting at a torch and creating beautiful colors and designs is mesmerizing and one I cannot get enough of.

For 35 years I was in the software business, selling large systems to companies around the world. Once I took up glass all I could think about when I was working my ‘regular’ job was how soon I could get back into the studio! Working full time in the software industry and keeping up my glass work created an interesting tension. The glass finally won – I am now retired from corporate America and working full time on my glass.

We made many trips to the local mill “outlet stores” (when they were actually attached to working mills) and dug through tables of remnants to find just the perfect piece of fabric for the current project or one to be thought of later.

I graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in textile design, but spent most of my time there turning my woven or printed fabrics into clothing, some of it wearable and some weird. All of the fabrics then were of natural fibers, silks, wool or cotton. It is amusing to me now that my line is mostly made of synthetic Polartec® and rainwear fabric.

My early years in the real world were working in small studios for other designers and in retail shops both large and small. I started Red Rover Clothing in 1993 when my children, Kate and James were just starting school. I packed up my old car and with a friend headed to a crafts fair in the Berkshires. I got a great response to the clothing and was on my way.

Twenty five or so years later, I have many national galleries and stores that sell my work as well as my own seasonal store here at the studio. My late husband and I renovated an historic house to hold my operations. I still participate in the craft fairs where I began, as well as many others on the eastern coast.

My designs are influenced in part from watching what people wear and what makes them feel comfortable and special. My customers often relate stories of the many compliments they get wearing my work. I use color, texture and detail to make the clothing unusual, but not over the top. The ribbon trims that embellish my work are my own design (my textile skills in miniature width). All of the clothing is designed and sewn in Massachusetts with the help of my assistants. I feel fortunate to be able to do what I love.

Katherine Bagley is a jeweler living in Gloucester. She is mostly self taught, but started out in Boston under the guidance of a silversmith. During her 20+ years of making jewelry she has taken many workshops focusing on different techniques to round out her skills.

“The learning never stops. There are always new ideas and techniques to incorporate into one’s own style and I love seeing how other jewelers approach their work.”

Katherine loves the satisfaction one gets from taking either a sheet of metal or piece of wire and turning it into a wearable piece of art. Her style is comfortable and has an organic feel to it. For her the creative process is fluent.

“I tend to create as I go. I have a general idea in my head but I find many times it changes as I go depending on what I feel is needed for balance and aesthetics. Only when I feel it can I then say it is done and release it.”

Ariel Kessler is a collector of stories. Her mixed media art encompass lively, colorful imagery in a whimsical world. She is inspired by children's book authors and illustrators. Judy Robinson-Cox is a photographer and mixed-media artist who creates artworks that transport the viewer to alternate times and realities. She constructs playful tableaus and assemblages from food, found objects and tiny plastic figures that deliver the viewer to a fanciful world devoid of pestilence, politics and pollution. Working with scale and space, she creates these miniature worlds in front of the camera and photographs and prints them without digital manipulation. Her mixed-media photomontage pieces merge photographs of iconic locations with both distressed visual and tactile textures that evoke nostalgic feelings.

I create most of my jewelry using Precious Metal Clay (PMC). PMC begins in a clay-like form containing ultra-fine silver , water, and organic binder. The PMC is textured, shaped, refined and finally fired in a kiln. As the piece is fired in the kiln the organic binder burns out, the water evaporates, and the fine silver particles are sintered together resulting in pure silver (.999) metal; sterling has other alloys such as copper, and is therefore marked .925.

PMC has limitless possibilities. In the wet stage it resembles clay that can be sculpted, molded, textured and formed. In the dry stage it mimics wood that can be carved, pierced/sawed, and joined to create intricate forms. Once fired, it is a solid piece of metal that can be soldered, hammered, and roll printed.

Textures:

Metal Clay Etching: I use a multi-step process when creating textures for my designs. Using a cycle of friction and heat black and white line drawings are burnished onto Polymer Clay. The Polymer Clay sticks to the ink on the paper and the paper is cured in an oven resulting in a low relief design.

Carving: In the leather-hard stage I hand carve designs directly into the metal clay.

Finishing and Inlay: After the piece is textured, refined and fired I use a variety of finishing methods including hand polishing, acid/heat patina, polymer clay inlay and Keum-boo. Keum-boo is the process of using friction and heat to adhere 24 Kt gold to pure silver.

In addition to PMC, I also create handmade beaded, forged, soldered and wire-wrapped jewelry using sterling silver and 14 KT gold-filled metals. I use a variety of different beads in my designs. They come from many parts of the globe and most are sterling silver, gemstones, vintage materials, hand collected sea glass and other natural materials. Due to the rarity of the materials and stones I choose, I often find that I cannot get the materials again so my designs are always in a state of evolution.

My designs are influenced in part from watching what people wear and what makes them feel comfortable and special. My customers often relate stories of the many compliments they get wearing my work. I use color, texture and detail to make the clothing unusual, but not over the top. The ribbon trims that embellish my work are my own design (my textile skills in miniature width). All of the clothing is designed and sewn in Massachusetts with the help of my assistants. I feel fortunate to be able to do what I love.

Chikako Designs offers you a line of unique designs that include handbags, accessories, clothing, men's neckties and infant clothing. All of Chikako's designs are inspired by a combination of her Asian heritage and her Western upbringing.

Having been born in Japan, I am forever inspired by the combination of the influences of my Japanese heritage and my western upbringing. I like to call my pieces ‘East that sometimes meets West’. I adore the combination of beautiful Asian prints placed seemingly simply on maybe a solid shape, always keeping in mind the functionality of the piece. After graduating from MassArt with a Fashion Design degree, I worked in New York and then Tokyo before deciding to return here to start my business in 2004. Judy Robinson-Cox is a photographer and mixed-media artist who creates artworks that transport the viewer to alternate times and realities. She constructs playful tableaus and assemblages from food, found objects and tiny plastic figures that deliver the viewer to a fanciful world devoid of pestilence, politics and pollution. Working with scale and space, she creates these miniature worlds in front of the camera and photographs and prints them without digital manipulation. Her mixed-media photomontage pieces merge photographs of iconic locations with both distressed visual and tactile textures that evoke nostalgic feelings.

My real passion is to capture the beauty of nature through the eye of my camera. I try to capture the uniqueness each season brings along with the magic light that exists. I particularly enjoy photographing during the golden hours of sunrise and sunset and also am drawn to images where nature and man made elements meet. I come from a long line of artists— my great-grandfather, New York artist Curtis Sisco, painted portraits of celebrities, including Louis Armstrong. My grandmother, Marion Virginia Neer, painted thousands of landscapes for collectors throughout New England. As a child, I would sit at her kitchen table and together we would draw. My parents recognized my talent at an early age and sent me to private art lessons with a local artist.

I attended the Art Institute of Boston and graduated with a BFA in advertising and graphic design. I’ve had a long career as a graphic designer, building successful brands for international companies. I started painting, being mentored by artist Ann Christensen. I picked up a paint brush and it was, and still is, like breathing for me. I realized I had a voice that needed to be expressed through paint. My graphic design background became evident in my work as I began interpreting the world through shapes and bold fields of color.

I voraciously studied people I wished to emulate. Hockney, Hopper, Wolf Khan, the Fauves, Fairfield Porter, and Matisse became my mentors. I consider myself to be an abstract expressionist, meaning there are things that are recognizable, somewhere between realism and abstractionism.

I opened an art gallery in Marblehead, MA, Courtney Fine Art, knowing little about art dealing. I showed emerging artists while painting upstairs. People would come up to my studio and buy my work right off the wall, still wet. Then a corporate dealer approached me and began selling my work to corporations and collectors.

For the last 18 years, I've shown in galleries, been in both solo and group shows. I am currently represented by corporate art dealer Boston Art. My paintings are a culmination of all of my experiences— twenty five years as a creative professional, painter, designer, photographer, and writer.

My work can be found in both private and corporate collections, in addition to being seen in movies, tv shows, and commercials.

Jacqueline began her wearable art journey in 2003 and displayed her work for the first time at the October 2004 Sea Glass Festival which was hosted by seARTS in Rockport, MA. Inspired by her husband and their mutual passion for history and antique glass collecting, she set about to combine her business and creative skills and attempt to fill a niche focused on hair jewelry. Jacqueline’s Cape Ann Designs creations expanded quickly to include a full array of hair accessories and jewelry created from her own sea glass collection. Jacqueline’s work appears prominently in A Passion for Sea Glass, by author Carole Lambert who launched the sea glass movement. Jacqueline was juried into the Cape Ann Artisans Studio Tour in 2013. Former Chair of seARTS, she is the founder of the seARTS Wearable Arts Group (2006). The community holiday shows led to the launch of Celebrate Wearable Art in 2011-2017. Cape Ann Designs collection can be found throughout the Boston area in galleries and specialty events mostly in support of non-profits. In 2019 she was invited to be part of the MFA’s holiday show. I have been creating my one-of-a-kind stained glass since 2004. My unique pieces are produced using the lead came method, as I prefer the structural rigidity. I have always been interested in art and started drawing and painting at an early age, but found my passion is with glass. I am inspired by nature, and from the beauty of the light shining through the many different colors and textures of glass. I have also incorporated my love of antiquing with my love of glass art! I am always looking for unique items to incorporate into my work, from crystals and geodes, to antique plates, salt cellars, and my favorite-antique bottles so that they may be re-purposed into bud vases. I consider my art to be not only beautiful, but also functional.

I moved to Gloucester 16 years ago and have enjoyed every moment. After the move to Gloucester my family bought me a camera, which I have with me all the time.

I have become a passionate photographer. Capturing the beauty of Gloucester and Cape Ann landscape, ocean and personality has been my desire and love.

Pam Stratton is a mosaic and mixed media artist. The love of texture and the natural world inspires her work. She creates jewelry and functional and fine art mosaics for home and garden.
